Beyond the Blueprint: How an Industrial Engineer Found Her True Calling Across Borders
Life rarely follows a straight path, and for many engineers, the journey to finding your true professional home is full of unexpected turns. Some find their passion right after graduation, while others discover it miles away from home, facing unfamiliar challenges head-on. This is the inspiring story of Engr. Toni Marcial, a graduate of Batangas State University, whose journey proves that with an open mind, a resilient heart, and a relentless drive to learn, even an unplanned path can lead to extraordinary heights.

The Foundation: Building Resilience Back Home
Like many students stepping into college, Industrial Engineering (IE) wasn’t actually Toni’s first choice. "I actually wanted to take Civil, but eventually, I chose Industrial Engineering and decided to make the most of the opportunity," she shares.
Rather than letting discouragement take hold, she embraced the challenge. Her education taught her to look at the bigger picture, analyze complex processes, and find efficiency in everyday systems.
Her early career in the Philippines gave her a rigorous introduction to the real world. Starting out in the parts engineering department's cost control section, she learned the critical value of quality and attention to detail. Later, at STMicroelectronics, she dove deep into semiconductor manufacturing—honing her skills in process evaluation, data analysis, and cross-functional team collaboration.
Starting with a modest local salary of ₱14,500 a month, Toni worked hard, doubled her income within two years, and built a rock-solid foundation of work ethic, discipline, and resourcefulness. But destiny had a bigger stage waiting for her.
Taking the Leap: Chasing Growth in Dubai
In 2023, driven by a desire for professional growth and a better future, Toni made the life-changing decision to move to Dubai. Leaving behind family and familiarity is never easy, but she viewed the leap as an essential challenge.
Stepping into the international arena came with its own set of trials. Transitioning from a manufacturing background in the Philippines to the fast-paced MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) and construction industry in Dubai meant learning an entirely new ecosystem.
I had to familiarize myself with mechanical systems, HVAC applications, valves, technical specifications, and the standards followed in construction projects," Engr. Toni recalls. Working alongside a multi-national workforce required adapting quickly, communicating effectively, and navigating strict project requirements.
Her secret to overcoming these hurdles? Humility and an unyielding willingness to learn.
Instead of being intimidated by what she didn't know, Toni asked questions, studied technical documents relentlessly, and treated every mistake as a stepping stone. Starting in Dubai with an initial salary of AED 4,500, her patience and perseverance paid off—tripling her growth over three years as she stepped into her current role as a Technical Engineer at HERZ Middle East FZE.

Finding Passion in the Mechanical World
Today, Toni handles technical product selection, reviews submittals, and coordinates closely with consultants and contractors on major HVAC and chilled-water projects across Dubai.
Perhaps one of the most fulfilling parts of her journey is the tangible impact of her labor. "Whenever I pass by a building or project I've worked on, I feel genuinely proud knowing that I was part of it," she shares. "People may see just another building, but for me, there's a story behind it—the technical work, the coordination, the challenges, and the effort that went into making it happen."
Reflecting on her career transition, she admits with a smile: "TBH, the ME field made me fall in love with engineering more."
