A Dream That Started with Numbers and Became Something Bigger

Engr. Kathlyn Jane P. Toral, who graduated from the Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology (BISCAST), never thought she would be a civil engineer when she grew up. As a child, she only knew she had a love for mathematics. It was her teacher in Grade 5 who recognized her potential and encouraged her to become a civil engineer, which she took to heart even when she didn't know what it meant to be a civil engineer.

Growing up, her love for mathematics turned into passion when she became interested in learning more about the design of structures and the ways in which people are protected by them. She turned into someone who had bigger dreams, not only of creating structures but also of creating something that could make an impact in people’s lives.

A Journey Marked by Sacrifice, Loss, and Unwavering Determination

Her college journey was far from smooth. Starting during the pandemic, she faced emotional and mental challenges that almost pushed her to shift courses. But everything changed when she ranked first in her program—proving to herself that she was capable.

Life outside school was just as demanding. While studying, she helped manage their family’s milk tea shop to support her father’s dialysis. Balancing responsibilities took a toll, and setbacks came—including losing her chance at Latin honors. The hardest moment came when her father passed away right after her final exams. Despite the pain, she held on to her promise to finish what she started—for him.

Rising Above Challenges: Finding Strength in Purpose and Faith

However, even in preparation for her board exams, these challenges did not cease. She went to Manila to review for her exams, worked on becoming more disciplined, and maintained a more rigorous regimen. However, there were times when she encountered self-doubts, especially when she failed in her pre-boards.

Instead of quitting, she chose to persevere. She prayed, acknowledged her struggles, and went on with her days. Even unexpected issues like the sudden rescheduling of her exam and taking it without electricity on the first day did not make her stop from persevering.

More Than Intelligence: The Mindset That Made the Difference

However, for Engr. Toral, the biggest battles she had to face were not only academic battles; she had to face her own internal battles. For her, it was not only about fulfilling her responsibility as a DOST scholar; it was also about facing her personal battles. The biggest personal battle she had to face was the loss of her father.

What fueled her to move forward was her purpose. She always reminded herself why she started and for whom she did it. She learned that it’s okay to be overwhelmed, but it’s not okay to give up. She moved forward step by step, not only enhancing her knowledge, but also enhancing her internal strength.

A Message to Future Engineers: Keep Going, No Matter What

If she could talk to her younger self, she would say, “Thank you for not giving up.” And to all those future civil engineers out there, she would say:

“This is not an easy journey, and there will be times when you’ll feel like giving up. But don’t. It won’t be easy, but trust yourself and the process, and always remember your purpose in becoming a civil engineer. One day, you’ll look back and say that all the struggles, sacrifices, and setbacks led you to who you’re meant to be.”

Today, Engr. Kathlyn Jane P. Toral is not only a licensed civil engineer, but she is also a symbol of perseverance. Her life teaches us that success is not always a smooth ride, but rather a journey of challenges, heartbreak, and courage to go on.
